We are excited to announce a brand new initiative that grew out of our work supporting a Jewish educator who identifies as neurodivergent. This term that refers to having a style of neurocognitive wiring that functions in ways which diverge significantly from the dominant societal standards of “normal.” People who are neurodivergent may be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, OCD or other cognitive differences.
Through our experience with this teacher’s learning, and the work of the education director who was supporting them, the idea for a new network emerged.
We recognize that other neurodivergent individuals may be interested in working as Jewish educators but may need training and professional development. We are aware that education directors may want to support neurodivergent faculty but may not have experience in doing so. We also recognize that there is a significant shortage of Jewish educators and that people in the neurodivergent community may be an untapped resource. We are striving towards inclusion for all. That means creating a program that supports neurodivergent Jewish educators in strengths-based skill building, and supports their learning communities in embracing neurodiversity as a benefit for the whole community. Therefore, we propose this new training to further and deepen our inclusion efforts.
Jewish Learning Venture’s Neurodivergent Teacher Training will engage neurodivergent Jews who are already in Jewish education or those interested in beginning their path as Jewish educators in a four-month cohort-model program. Our strengths-based approach is designed to create accessible, inclusive work environments that benefit educators and students alike.
Teacher trainees who live in the Greater Philadelphia area will receive a $500 stipend; however, anyone may apply for this online training.
